ARINC Executive Frederick J. Ferrer Is Named to Maryland’s New Cyber Commission
December 22, 2011
Annapolis—ARINC Incorporated today announced that its Director of Cyberspace Business, Frederick J. Ferrer, has been appointed to the state’s Commission on Maryland Cybersecurity Innovation and Excellence.
Cybersecurity—or the protection of information networks against intrusions, espionage, and data theft—is a critical area of concern for government, industry, and the military, and it is growing more critical every day. In July, the Maryland legislature authorized creation of the Cybersecurity Commission to promote growth of the cybersecurity industry in Maryland.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley appointed Ferrer and fifteen other private industry representatives to the Commission on October 14th. He also named twelve state and federal government officials.
The Commission is charged with developing plans to promote cybersecurity, attract private investment, promote public and private partnerships, expand research and development, and enhance workforce training and education. The Commission will also examine methods of recovering from cyber attacks. A preliminary report is due in January 2012, and a comprehensive plan by January 2013.
At ARINC, Ferrer has leveraged the company’s engineering and marketing resources to steer it toward a leadership role in fighting threats from cyberspace.
“ARINC creates and delivers many cyber-related products and services to large, sophisticated customers across industry, government, and the military,” he states. “We not only have a responsibility to help our customers guard against cyberthreats, but we are extremely well-positioned to assist both them and the nation in accomplishing this. Maryland’s high concentration of Government, Defense, and Security agencies, as well as its many advanced research institutions, can make our region the nation’s “Epicenter for Cybersecurity.”
After joining ARINC in May 2010, Ferrer was invited to chair the Pathways to
Cybersecurity Careers Advisory Board for the Anne Arundel (County) Workforce
Development Corporation (AAWDC). The AAWDC built a consortium of academic and industry partners that won a $4.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to support cybersecurity training for the region’s workforce. The Tech Council of Maryland named Ferrer “Rising IT Star of the Year” at its 2010 CIO&CTO Live! Award event. This year, Ferrer was invited to join the Board of Directors of the Chesapeake Regional Tech Council, where he is currently building a Cyber Forum.
The Commission on Maryland Cybersecurity Innovation and Excellence is based at the Office of the President, University of Maryland University College. The contact is Nancy S. Williamson, J.D. (nwilliamson@umuc.edu)
