Relm Wireless Corporation Joins ARINC Test Lab with New P-25 Land Mobile Radios

June 27, 2011

Annapolis— ARINC Incorporated today announced that Relm Wireless Corporation, a leading provider of high-specification radios for public safety, industry, and government, has become a partner in ARINC’s radio interoperability test laboratory in Annapolis, MD.

Relm has provided the ARINC lab with two of its new P25 digital portable 800MHz KNG P800 land mobile radios. The KNG P800 model recently received equipment authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for use in the United States. It provides interoperability under the Project 25 (P25) standard established by APCO, the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials.

“RELM Wireless is excited to participate in this one-of-a-kind testing resource for our industry,” stated RELM President and CEO David Storey. “Our KNG Series trunking radios address new customers who were previously outside the scope of our product line. We welcome this opportunity to document the performance, reliability, and interoperability of Relm radio products alongside the products of our industry peers.”

Today’s land mobile radios continue to differ widely in their operational characteristics. Despite P25 Compliance Assessment Programs conducted by many LMR manufacturers, there are still questions about real-world operation and interoperability. The ARINC Interoperability Test and Demonstration Center (ITDC) enables independent, hands-on testing of LMR performance across multiple platforms, and objective performance evaluations. It is a unique, vendor-neutral platform where makers of Land Mobile Radio (LMR) equipment, their customers and technology partners can test performance characteristics and evaluate the interoperability of radio systems.

“Purchasers of Land Mobile Radio systems today want more information about usability,” said Marvin Ingram, ARINC Public Safety Systems Senior Director. “They ask whether a radio is easy to program, manage, and deploy. The ARINC lab works in areas that Compliance Assessment Programs may leave out—including product usability and actual interoperability across specific platforms in the real world.”

The ARINC test laboratory has undergone steady expansion since opening in 2009, and is equipped with trunked, conventional, and P25 land mobile radio systems, broadband wireless, voice, video and data technologies, and video surveillance and physical security platforms. Industry partners include Relm, Kenwood, Cassidian, Cisco, Tait, E.F. Johnson, Thales, Zetron, and Exacom, with more expected in the near future.
